To resolve a color cast in family photos on a Mac, you can open the Photos app, access the Edit tools, and use the White Balance feature to adjust the image's warmth Apple Support. The application includes an Eyedropper button that automatically corrects colors based on a specific reference point in your image, such as skin tones or neutral gray areas Apple Support.

Accessing the White Balance Tools

Start by going to the Photos app on your Mac Apple Support. To enter the editing interface, double-click a photo or video, and then click Edit in the toolbar Apple Support. Next, click Adjust in the toolbar, followed by clicking White Balance to reveal the color correction options Apple Support.

Applying Eyedropper Color Corrections

You can click the pop-up menu to choose a specific type of white balance correction, and then click the Eyedropper button to apply adjustments by clicking a target area in your photo Apple Support. The tool balances the warmth of an image using one of three methods:

  • Skin Tone: This balances warmth based on skin tones, which automatically adjusts the skin tones of your photo or video when you click the eyedropper in an area of a person's skin Apple Support.
  • Neutral Gray: This balances the warmth of an image based on neutral gray, automatically adjusting the gray areas of your photo or video when you click a neutral gray area with the eyedropper Apple Support.
  • Temperature/Tint: This balances warmth by adjusting color temperatures (from blue to yellow) and tint (from green to magenta) Apple Support. With the eyedropper selected, clicking a neutral gray area automatically adjusts the temperature and tint of the gray areas in your image Apple Support.

Comparing and Saving Adjustments

While working on your image, you can temporarily see the original unedited image by clicking and holding the Compare button in the toolbar Apple Support. As a useful shortcut, you can also temporarily view the original by pressing and holding the M key Apple Support. When you are finished editing, click Done or press Return to save your work Apple Support.

Restoring the Unedited Photo

If you need to undo all your changes and restore the original image, select the photo or video, and then choose Image > Revert to Original Apple Support. Alternatively, you can click Revert to Original directly in the editing toolbar Apple Support.
