What does the recipient see when they scan it?

The piece appears hanging in a room made for that memory - a bright coastal room for a summer, a warm dark hallway for a memorial.

The piece appears hanging in a room, and the room is made for that particular memory — a bright coastal one for a summer, a warm dark hallway for a memorial.

It is derived from what the buyer wrote, which means a thin description produces a generic room.

Why a room rather than a loading screen

The moment somebody taps a link from a group chat, or points a phone at a print on a wall, is the whole of their first impression. It is a window of seconds before anything else has arrived.

A progress bar on black says a website is loading. A photograph of their memory hanging in a room says this is a thing that exists.

That is the entire argument for doing it, and it is a design decision rather than a feature — the alternative was cheaper and worse.

Per memory, not per catalogue

The obvious way to build this is to render two or three neutral rooms and reuse them for everything. That is right for a gallery, where the room has to recede behind any painting.

It is wrong here. This is one family's memory rather than a catalogue item, and the room it hangs in should belong to it.

Which means the description does real work

The room comes out of what you wrote. A description naming a beach in August produces a different room from one naming a kitchen in December, and that is the mechanism working as intended.

A description that says very little produces a room that could belong to anybody — the same failure as a generic portrait, arriving one layer further out. More on that in why the small details are the whole thing.

Why it is not a photograph of your actual room

A reasonable question, since the piece will eventually hang somewhere real. It would be possible to ask for a picture of the wall and composite onto it.

It is worse. The recipient has not hung anything yet at the moment they first open this, and a room they recognise makes the moment about interior decoration rather than about the memory. A room that belongs to the memory rather than to the house keeps the attention where it should be.

What it is not

It is not an app, not a headset, and not something the recipient has to learn. They point a phone at a print. Is it a digital frame covers what is and is not on the wall.
